Elopements are simple—that’s part of their beauty! But they still need to be thoughtfully planned to ensure a seamless and stress-free day that’s truly aligned with your desires. The Wedding Duo Elopement Planning Checklist

1. Get a Marriage License

First things first: if you want to be legally married after your elopement, you’ll need a state-issued marriage license. Thankfully, the process couldn’t be simpler! Just head to your county clerk’s office to apply and pay the fee. The office will issue your license after a mandatory waiting period of several days (check the duration of this period in your state to ensure you don’t wait too long to apply!). After that, your license will be valid for 60 days.

2. Choose a Time and Location

Next, choose your elopement’s time and location. We suggest somewhere with meaning in your relationship, such as your favorite beach or the first National Park you visited together. And when it comes to choosing a time, the lighting for your photos should be your primary consideration. Generally, this means avoiding the middle of the day and opting for a sunrise or sunset elopement. We think it’s more romantic, anyway!

3. Check Legal Requirements for the Location

Certain locations, such as National Parks, require you to apply for a permit before eloping there. Be sure to check and adhere to all legal requirements to ensure that your elopement day goes off without a hitch!

4. Book a Photographer

Investing in a great photographer is our #1 tip for eloping couples. Since elopements are intimate and happen quickly (compared to traditional weddings), you want someone who can capture every moment beautifully and authentically. Definitely don’t skip this one! We’ve talked to many couples who didn’t hire a photographer for their elopement, and later regretted it. It will be a special day for both of you, and it deserves to be documented.

5. Book an Officiant, if Needed

The only other vendor you need to hire is an officiant—unless your state allows self-solemnization. Then, you have the option to perform your own ceremony and act as your own “witnesses” when you sign your marriage license. This option isn’t available everywhere, so check your local laws if it interests you.

6. Book Other Vendors, if Desired

Hiring a professional to do your hair and makeup can help you feel confident and polished, especially if your elopement location is exposed to the elements. Additionally, consider hiring an elopement coordinator. They can help you identify the necessary permits and create a timeline, which can be especially helpful if you’re planning to elope outdoors or in a destination. Everything else is optional, and you should only add what will enhance your experience!

7. Choose Your Attire

A long white dress or a three-piece suit not your thing? That’s a-okay! In the world of elopements (and let’s be real, weddings too), you really do have permission to wear whatever you want. The only rule is to choose whatever will make you feel like your most confident and comfortable self.

8. Create a Loose Timeline

Even if your elopement will be shorter and have fewer logistics than a traditional wedding day, consider how it will unfold. Then, create a timeline that accounts for getting-ready time, travel between locations, optimal lighting, and potential inclement weather or delays. It doesn’t have to be precise! Additionally, don’t forget to allow time for signing your legal paperwork or for any post-ceremony plans, such as a private dinner. A timeline isn’t intended to box you in or structure your day too rigidly. Instead, it ensures a day that feels unhurried and full of intention, allowing you to focus on each other.
