As a wedding planner, I love it when my clients use Pinterest to find wedding inspiration. It’s a great way to browse wedding ideas and keep everything organized in one place. When used properly, Pinterest is an incredible resource. However, whether you’re using Pinterest to DIY your wedding or communicate with your planner, there are some things to keep in mind. Keep reading for our four-step guide to using Pinterest to plan and design your wedding.
The first step to planning and designing a wedding with Pinterest is finding your inspiration. Thankfully, Pinterest is full of it! Begin by creating boards such as “Wedding Tablescapes,” “Wedding Ceremonies,” and “Wedding Receptions” to keep all of your inspiration organized. Then, as you browse, you can pin anything that catches your eye to the appropriate board.
Once you’ve taken the time to browse and fill your boards with inspiration, it’s time to analyze. Take a look at your boards one at a time and see what those pins have in common. Are they all set outdoors? If so, you’ll want to choose a venue with outdoor components, not a ballroom. This is also a great way to choose a color scheme for your wedding—what colors are you seeing pop up consistently?
A very important step in planning your wedding with Pinterest is considering your budget. Many of the wedding photos you see on social media are from celebrity weddings or even styled shoots and aren’t realistic for the average couple. Though it can be tempting to let the pressure of social media take over, it’s important to stick to your wedding budget as closely as possible. Take some time to go through your inspiration boards with your budget in mind. Is a full floral ceiling installation actually plausible? What about that Oscar de la Renta gown? Look for inspiration from real weddings or even local venues that are closer to your budget.
After identifying the common themes in your Pinterest boards, it’s time to edit them down. This means removing any pins that do not align with these common themes or your budget. This step is incredibly important because it will help you stay focused and create a cohesive wedding design. Consistency in the designs and inspiration will also help your vendors better understand your vision.
