Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting seasons of life. But along with choosing venues, flowers, music, and menus comes something many couples find far less glamorous: the financial side of planning a wedding.

Budgets, deposits, and unexpected expenses can quickly feel overwhelming, especially if this is the first time you’ve managed a large financial project together. In this episode of The Wedding Duo Podcast, we sat down with personal finance coach Becca Andrews, founder of Money Beyond Math, to talk about how couples can approach wedding finances with confidence. Becca specializes in helping people learn the money skills many of us were never taught in school, including saving, paying off debt, and planning for big financial goals like weddings.

Start With a Wedding Budget That Reflects Your Priorities

One of the biggest mistakes couples make when setting a wedding budget is assuming there is a “correct” way to allocate money.

You may have seen those wedding budget charts that suggest spending a certain percentage on catering, another on photography, and another on flowers. While these guides can be helpful starting points, they rarely reflect what couples actually care about.

However, every couple has different priorities! Some couples dream of a live band and an incredible dance floor. Others care more about an amazing dining experience because they’re passionate about food. Some couples want stunning floral installations, while others prefer a more minimal aesthetic and would rather invest in photography or travel.

Becca emphasizes that your budget should reflect your priorities, not just someone else’s template. Instead of trying to make your wedding fit a predetermined budget breakdown, start by talking with your partner about what matters most to both of you. From there, you can decide where to splurge and where to simplify.

Automate Your Savings Whenever Possible

Wedding planning comes with hundreds of decisions, so one of Becca’s top recommendations is to simplify the financial side wherever possible. One of the easiest ways to do this is by automating your savings and bills. Instead of manually transferring money each month, you can set up automatic transfers from your checking account into a dedicated wedding savings account.

Even small automated contributions can add up quickly over time! The key is starting with whatever amount feels manageable. Whether it’s $25, $100, or more each month, automation removes the pressure of remembering to move money manually while you’re busy planning the rest of the wedding.

Another helpful strategy Becca shared involves using high-yield savings accounts to store your wedding funds. If you already have money saved for upcoming vendor payments, placing those funds in a high-yield savings account allows the money to earn interest while you wait for those payments to come due. While the interest earned may not be huge, it can still add a little extra cushion to your wedding savings without requiring additional effort.

Track Your Wedding Expenses Carefully

With deposits, installment payments, and final balances happening at different points throughout the planning process, it’s easy for couples to lose track of their spending.

Using a tracking system, whether that’s a spreadsheet, an app, or a budgeting tool, helps keep everything organized. Some couples prefer budget apps like YNAB (You Need A Budget) or Rocket Money, which can track spending and categorize expenses automatically. Others prefer spreadsheets because they allow for full customization and visibility.

Inside The Wedding Duo Membership, we include a wedding budget spreadsheet and tracker designed specifically for couples planning their weddings. It includes a sample budget, space to track vendor payments, and a clear breakdown of expenses so you can easily see where your money is going throughout the planning process.

Consider Credit Card Rewards Strategically

For couples who are comfortable managing credit responsibly, wedding expenses can actually create an opportunity to earn travel rewards. One strategy Becca recommends is opening a new travel rewards credit card before you begin making major wedding payments. Many cards offer generous sign-up bonuses when you reach a certain spending threshold within the first few months.

Because weddings often involve large expenses like venue deposits, catering payments, or photography balances, those purchases can help you reach that bonus quickly. Those points can then be used toward your honeymoon flights, hotel stays, or travel experiences.

Of course, this strategy only works if the balance is paid off responsibly. Carrying long-term credit card debt can quickly outweigh any rewards earned.

Build the Habit of “Money Dates”

Wedding planning is one of the first major financial collaborations many couples experience together. Because of that, Becca encourages couples to create a habit she calls money dates. These are simple, regular check-ins where you and your partner sit down together to review your finances.

Maybe that means looking at your wedding budget, discussing upcoming expenses, or reviewing how your savings plan is progressing. The key is building open communication around money in a low-stress environment.

Even after the wedding, these conversations become incredibly valuable as couples navigate other financial milestones like buying a home, paying off debt, or starting a family. The wedding becomes the first step in building those financial habits together!

Look for Creative Ways to Save

When couples start planning a wedding, they often assume their options are either “go all out” or “DIY everything.” But there are many middle-ground solutions that can save money while still maintaining the experience you want. For example, instead of elaborate floral installations, couples might choose silk flowers or simplified arrangements. Instead of a fully custom design experience, they might work with partially pre-designed decor elements.

Inside The Wedding Duo Membership, this is something we see all the time. Our community of engaged couples regularly shares ideas, creative solutions, and money-saving tips they’ve discovered while planning their weddings. From affordable decor options to vendor recommendations and smart planning shortcuts, it’s a space where couples help each other find ways to stay on budget without sacrificing the experience they want. Sometimes the best ideas come from couples who are navigating the exact same decisions you are!
